The TNT Chess team attended the Taupo Regional Chess Tournament on Thursday 30th May. They competed alongside seven other schools from Taupō and Rotorua districts. Students competed for rookie, junior, intermediate and senior individual and team honours, including an opportunity to attend the Nationals. Our newly formed team consisted of Ashtin Broome (9RU1), Brie Fletcher (9NG1), Dilwyn Price (9NG2), Riley Parker-Ord (11RU2), Ari Pepper (12TG1), Tristin Fletcher (10NG2), and Immanuel Wightman (12NG2). They competed with 91 other competitors ranging in ages from 8 to 18 years. Individual brilliance included Riley Winning a penchant for the BIGGEST UPSET, beating an opponent 190 points above him, and Tristin winning 2 penchants for QUICK KNOCKOUT, check mating his opponent in less than 10 moves and USAIN BOLT penchant for winning a game in less than 30 seconds. The TNT chess team gained invaluable experience competing using Swiss chess rules overseen by Chess Power Ltd, with Waipāhīhī School hosting the tournament for the fifth year running.
