Over the weekend of the 16-17th of March, Year 10 student Cohen LUDLAM attended the New Zealand Bmx National Championships held at the Hawkes Bay Bmx Track in Havelock North.
Cohen had been training hard leading up to this event only to fracture his wrist three weeks prior to the event causing some unwanted frustration heading into the major sporting event of the Bmx Calendar.
Racing in the 14 year age category, Cohen battled against his fierce competitors for two days, who all travel around New Zealand to various qualifying events throughout the year to have the opportunity to win a National plate for the following racing year.
The goal was simple. Qualify into the top 12 racers to make the deadman semi-finals where only the top four in each race qualify to make the National Final. Cohen made the semi-finals convincingly, racing hard and pushing through some tough qualifying mottos. In the all-important semi-final Cohen jostled hard to come home 3rd and make the National final!
Cohen lined up in the final shortly after and achieved an outstanding 5th position overall earning him the right to wear the NZ 5 number plate for this year’s race season. An awesome effort after the earlier injury setback and competitive age category. Well done Cohen!
