Volleyball Girls North Island tournament week
What an amazing experience for our Junior Volleyball Girls, four days away in Auckland playing games from 9am in the morning until 8pm at night, followed up but some late evening and early morning duties. Our young team made up of 4 year 10’s and 7 year 9’s had only started practicing 8 weeks earlier and many had never had any training until this point. We had three overnight tournaments at Mount Maunganui leading up to North Islands, but I still don’t think we were totally prepared or knew what to expect when we headed off in the bus on Monday afternoon.
Our team played their hearts out, we won some sets as the week went on and had some great rallies but winning a game still eluded us. There were bumps, bruises and strains and even a few tears, but the girls never gave up, they were positive and supportive of each other and most of the time looked like they were having fun. Up and Go’s and Powerade's became the staple diet followed up with lollies, donuts and Ice Cream.
Watching this team develop and grow over the last two months has been amazing, from the purchasing of knee pads (and using them), learning to overarm serve, spiking and blocking at the net and the odd dive here and there, they have come a long way in two months. There is some great talent within this team and I think next year we will see some wins on the scoresheet. A big shout out to Darren and James for coaching the girls and to the parent helpers for the weekends away.
Congratulations everyone!
